Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

While we at But Just Why definitely agree that there is an over-supply of songs about rainbows, even though there are so many of them, it pales in comparison to how many songs there are about ‘love’, for example.

Nevertheless, here’s a list of just a few songs about rainbows to demonstrate how overcooked this theme really is: The Rainbow Connection, The Muppets; Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Judy Garland; She’s A Rainbow, The Rolling Stones; Gravity’s Rainbow, The Klaxons; Rainbow, Battles; Rainbows & Waterfalls, Pretty Lights; Black Rainbows, Cut Copy; Rainbow Man, Busy P; Rainbows, Bit Lolitas; Colours of the Rainbow, Sevenn; Lick Rainbow, Ford Mustang, Rainbow, J3 EDC, Chasing Rainbows, Robot Orchestra; I’m Always Chasing Rainbows’, Perry Como; Neon Rainbow, The Box Tops; Pocketful of Rainbows, Deane Hawley; Rainbow at Midnight, Jimmie Rodgers; Rainbow Ride, Andy Kim; and, Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows, Lesley Gore.

But Just Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

The array of artists covering a vast spectrum of musical styles and genres in our list demonstrates that writing and producing songs about rainbows are off-limits to nobody.

The mystical, illusionary spectrum of light is marvelled at by young and old and inspires creativity with a view to creating original songs that endure far longer than any fleeting rainbow is capable of. Having said that, we like Kermit the Frog’s answer best (from The Rainbow Connection produced by Jim Henson & Paul Williams for original soundtrack to The Muppet Movie):

Verse 1

Why are there so many

           Songs about rainbows

And what’s on the other side?

           Rainbows are visions

           But only illusions

And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we’ve been told and some choose to

           Believe it

I know they’re wrong to wait and see

           Hook

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

The lovers, the dreamers and me

           Verse 2

           Who said that every wish

           Would be heard and answered

When wished on the morning star?

           Somebody thought of that

           And someone believed it

Look what it’s done so far

What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing

And what do you think we might see?

           Hook

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

The lovers, the dreamers and me

           Bridge

All of us under its spell

We know that it’s probably magic

           Verse 3

           Have you been half asleep

           And have you heard voices?

I’ve heard them calling my name

           Is this the sweet sound

           That calls the young sailors?

The voice might be one and the same

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it:

It’s something that I’m supposed to be

           Hook

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

The lovers, the dreamers and me
